FOOD BABES WILL EAT

Here's a tip. If your dog doesn't like dry dog food, (which Babes didn't), well, I found something she'll eat. I don't really want to feed her canned food. It's called 0..ne. Translated (o.n.e.), and it's for adult dogs. I believe it's put out by Purienna, and it's in most grocery stores. I've tried different brands, but she loves this, and you can either get the Lamb and Rice, or beef and Rice. I believe the one bag is green, but I don't know what color the other is. She likes the Beef and Rice, but next time I'm trying the lamb. Anyway, thought this might help.

It's good you found something she'll eat, because after all what's most important is having your dog on a food that they will eat and do well on.

I'd personally be leary of the high corn and wheat content, and low amounts of actual meat, though.

Have you tried any kibbles such as Wellness, Canidyea, California Natural, Eagle Pack, Royal Canin, Enova, etc.? Might be something to try out in the future.

Well, I've tried Kibbles, and she won't have it. I didn't know there were grains in o.n.e. Is that harmful?

Oh, thank god someone's recommending quality kibble. I'm admittedly a recent dog food snob (har har), but I've noticed a marked improvement in my dog's energy and general happiness since switching her food to something that's grain free and of high quality (Inova Evo).

Hey Dream Lady, yup, the majority of the ingredients in most store-brand kibbles (Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree, etc.) are corn and wheat. Dogs are unable to make use of these foods, they're primarily used as fillers, to make the food cheaper to produce and make your dog feel full, faster. There's a lot of speculation going on that these ingredients are the cause of a lot of common dog problems, such as hyperactivity, allergies (both skin and digestive), infections, and even simple things such as increased shedding, bad breath, tear stains, and bad odour overall.

Here are the ingredients of the chicken-based O.n.e, listed by weight:

Chicken, brewers rice, whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, whole grain wheat, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form
of Vitamin E), non-fat yogurt, animal digest, dicalcium phosphate, salt, malted barley flour, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite

Note that "chicken", though it is a first ingredient, as it is not listed as chicken-meal, it means that it was weighed before the dehydration process, so that's misleading. Poultry bi-product is nothing more then ground up beaks and feathers, so though it is a protein source, it's a very poor one.

Remember that dogs are first and formost meat eaters, so the food they should be eating should have a high quantity of quality meat. The first ingredient in their food should be chicken (or an alternative meat) meal, and within the first five ingredients, there should be a total of three propper meat sources.

My pup had been started on Eukanuba by his breeder, and never really had shown much interest in it at all, after switching to a high quality food though, he won't even touch a lot of other kibbles anymore. His breath doesn't smell, his coat is not oily or smelly at the slightest, and he hardly ever sheds except for coat-blowing season, so it really can make a big difference in the health of your dog.

Maybe see if a local petstore has samples of some of those high quality kibbles (enova evo's great, it's designed to mimic a raw diet in a kibble) and see if she'd have any interest in a kibble with good and proper meat in it. Though they are a bit more expensive by the bag then other kibbles, you will feed a fair bit less since your dog is actually able to digest a lot more of it, which also means that they'll deficate less.

tunedtochords -- Good on ya for feeding a high quality kibble!

Or if your dog is a redneck like mine is and your not going to pay for that nasty cannd food you can wet the kibbles in cool water and they wont notice the diffrence.
Even if you don't pay for canned food do make sure that the food you by has a vary small amount of corn in it. My dog had serious itching problems wile she ate the food with corn but we put her on a food called flint river ranch kibbles and she's fine now. But plese plese plese don't go out and by the food that is mostly meat, you'll be broke in a month and your pup seriousley wont notice. Espeshely if you have a person in your household that keeps slipping her bites of people food under the table.

You don't necessarily have to go broke to feed your dog well, infact, I find brands such as Iams and Eukanuba to be really damn expensive around here.

There are good cheap foods as well such as Neutro and Kirkland --- No corn in those, and they're both pretty cheap.

Also, if you want to get her more interested in kibble, find some low-sodium chicken broth and add it to the kibble, or add it to the water that you soak the kibble in, it seems to be pretty irresistible to dogs.

Hi guys. I had no idea about all that stuff. I'll buy the Kibbles or something else. She has seemed more jittery and hyper than usual. Thanks so much for informing me. I had no idea. Does anyone know about the food that's in pouches? It seemed better than canned, and she liked it. Still, it's so expensive.
